Have you ever had a similar experience?

You happily finish packing everything away and are ready to begin the next part of your journey, only to find that nothing happens when you press the retract switch on your electric RV awning. The nearest repair shop is also more than an hour away.

Or perhaps the awning suddenly refuses to retract while it is raining. Rain continues to fall onto the fabric, the wind begins to pick up, and you keep pressing the switch, hoping the motor will start working again. At that moment, everything feels terrible.

However, the first problem you need to solve is not immediately determining whether the battery, switch, or motor has failed. It is:

What Emergency Retraction Methods Are Commonly Used on the Market?

Electric RV awnings on the market are generally designed with an emergency retraction method, but the operating procedures vary significantly between brands and models.

Some Dometic and Lippert products require a specific socket, ratchet wrench, or power drill. In these cases, the user needs to:

  • Locate the correct emergency nut;
  • Prepare the correct socket size;
  • Prepare a drill or wrench;
  • Confirm the correct direction of rotation;
  • Control the speed and torque to avoid damaging the drive mechanism.

In addition, not every model from the same brand uses the same manual interface. Therefore, the specific model must be confirmed and the corresponding manual must be checked first.

Some Carefree and Dometic electric awnings use an external power source as the emergency method.

When the RV’s original power supply fails, the user may need to remove the motor head cover, disconnect part of the input wiring, and then use jumper wires to connect a vehicle battery or power-tool battery to the emergency terminals or motor wires.

If the awning moves in the wrong direction, the positive and negative connections must be reversed.

This method can bypass the RV’s original power supply or control circuit, but the operator needs to prepare:

  • A suitable DC power source;
  • Jumper wires or battery clamps;
  • Tools for removing the motor head cover;
  • Correct wiring knowledge;
  • The manual for the corresponding model.

Carefree’s official manual also specifically warns that 110V AC power must never be connected directly to a 12V awning motor, as this may cause permanent damage.

These methods can solve specific problems, but when it is raining, windy, or time to leave the campsite, the user may not have the correct socket, external battery, jumper wires, or disassembly tools available.

Awnlux W5700: Use the Emergency Hand Crank to Retract the Awning First

The Awnlux W5700 electric RV awning is equipped with an emergency hand crank.

When the RV house battery is dead, the switch fails, the control wiring is abnormal, or the electric system temporarily stops working, the user can connect the supplied hand crank to the emergency operating interface and manually retract the awning.

Its purpose is not to replace normal electric operation. Instead, it provides the user with a second way to close the awning when a real emergency occurs.

Retract the awning first, then inspect the battery, switch, or motor after reaching the next safe location.

Emergency Manual Retraction Steps for the Awnlux W5700

The location of the emergency interface may vary slightly between models. Check the corresponding manual before operation.

1. Stop Pressing the Electric Switch

If the awning does not respond when the switch is pressed, do not continue pressing it repeatedly.

2. Remove Hanging Accessories

Remove the LED light power cable, side panels, wind straps, clothes hangers, or any other accessories that may interfere with retraction.

3. Locate the Emergency Interface on the Motor End

Follow the manual to locate the emergency operating interface on the motor end of the W5700.

4. Fully Insert the Emergency Hand Crank

Make sure the hand crank is properly engaged to prevent it from slipping during operation.

5. Turn Slowly in the Retraction Direction

Turn the hand crank slowly and evenly while observing whether both awning arms are folding normally.

6. Fully Retract and Secure the Awning

Confirm that both arms are fully against the RV sidewall, the roller tube is not loose, and the awning is properly secured for travel.

2. After Reaching a Safe Location, How Can You Determine Whether the Problem Is the Battery, Motor, or Switch?

For example, after an Awnlux W5700 electric awning has been safely retracted, it can be inspected in the following order.

Do not immediately purchase a new motor. Battery, fuse, wiring, and switch problems can also cause the awning to stop responding completely.

Step 1: Observe the Symptoms First

Step 2: Check the RV Battery and Power Supply

The fact that the RV lights still work does not necessarily mean the battery can operate the awning.

Lights require relatively little current, while the motor needs a much higher starting current when extending or retracting the awning. The battery voltage may appear normal with no load but drop quickly as soon as the awning switch is pressed.

The operating voltage range of the Awnlux electric awning is 12–15V.

Check the Following

  1. Confirm that the RV battery disconnect switch is turned on;
  2. Check whether the battery terminals are loose or corroded;
  3. Check the fuse and circuit breaker for the awning;
  4. Connect the RV to a normal shore-power or charging system;
  5. Briefly test the awning again;
  6. Use a multimeter to measure the actual voltage while operating the awning.

If the awning works normally after being connected to a reliable power source, the problem is usually related to:

  • Low battery charge;
  • An aging battery;
  • Loose wiring terminals;
  • Excessive voltage drop in the power cable;
  • Poor grounding.

Step 3: Check the Switch

Most 12V electric awnings extend and retract by reversing the polarity of the two motor wires.

Therefore, if the awning can extend but cannot retract, the motor itself may not be damaged. More likely causes include:

  • A damaged switch contact in one direction;
  • A loose wire on the retract side;
  • A poor plug connection;
  • Insufficient voltage.

Simple Inspection Method

When pressing “Extend” and “Retract,” observe:

  • Whether the switch returns normally;
  • Whether voltage can be measured at the motor in both directions;
  • Whether the motor works after using the hand crank to retract the awning halfway and then operating the switch again.

Results

  • The switch has input power, but there is no output in one direction: the switch may be damaged;
  • The switch has output in both directions, but there is no power at the motor: the wiring or plug between the switch and motor may have a problem;
  • The voltage at the motor is too low during retraction: check the battery, power cable, and ground connection.

Users who are not familiar with DC electrical testing should not randomly short the switch terminals or connect wires directly to the battery.

Step 4: Check the Motor

After confirming that the correct voltage is reaching the motor, use the manual crank test to help determine the cause.

Situation 1: The Motor Makes Noise, but the Roller Tube Does Not Turn

Possible causes include:

  • A damaged reduction gear;
  • A failed connection between the motor and roller tube.

Situation 2: Neither the Motor nor the Hand Crank Can Move the Awning

In this situation, check the mechanical components before replacing electrical parts:

  • Are the left and right arms bent?
  • Are the arm joints jammed?
  • Is the roller tube tilted?
  • Is the fabric caught in the end cap?
  • Are the brackets misaligned?

Do not try to solve the problem by using a longer wrench, a high-torque drill, or several people pulling forcefully on the fabric.

3. If the W5700 Was Just Installed, How Should It Be Checked Step by Step?

A newly installed electric awning that will not retract does not necessarily have a defective component.

Problems after installation are more commonly related to the power supply, wiring, mounting position, shipping restraints, or arm alignment. The installation should be checked step by step rather than immediately disassembling the motor.

Step 1: Confirm the 12V Power Supply

Check whether the newly installed wiring meets the following requirements:

  • Make sure the voltage at the motor reaches 12V, rather than only checking the battery voltage;
  • The wire gauge can handle the motor’s starting current;
  • The battery is not at a low state of charge.

If the wire is too thin or too long, voltage drop may prevent the motor from retracting normally even when the battery itself is working properly.

Awnlux recommends using 16 AWG or larger wire, with a wire length of no more than 32 ft.

Step 2: Check the Switch and Fuse as Described Above

Step 3: Check Whether the Left and Right Arms Are Parallel

Observe the awning from the rear or front side of the RV:

  • Are both arms installed at the same height?
  • Are the upper brackets at the same level?
  • Are the arm channels approximately vertical?
  • Is the roller tube level?
  • Do both sides move at the same time?
  • Do the arms interfere with the RV door, lights, or trim?

If the left and right brackets are installed at significantly different positions, the awning may still extend, but the resistance during retraction may increase considerably.

Step 4: Check Whether the Fabric Is Centered

Observe how the fabric rolls onto the roller tube:

  • Does it continue shifting toward one side?
  • Does it rub against the end cap?
  • Are there wrinkles on one side?
  • Is the fabric cord correctly inserted into the RV awning rail?
  • Is the rail entrance sharp or deformed?
  • Is the roller tube parallel to the RV awning rail?

Off-center fabric can gradually increase the motor load and eventually cause the awning to stop halfway.

Step 5: Prepare the Information Needed for After-Sales Diagnosis

If the cause still cannot be determined, provide the following information when contacting Awnlux after-sales support:

  • Order number and awning model;
  • Awning size;
  • A video showing what happens when the switch is pressed;
  • A video showing manual crank operation;
  • Voltage measurements at the battery and motor.

This information is usually much more useful for locating the problem than simply stating that “the motor is broken.”
